Hollie Hookway

My experience with horses started from a very young age. My mother worked in racing, which gave her the opportunity to bring home the occasional TB that could no longer race. For a long time, all I knew about horses and riding, was retraining racehorses. As a child I didn’t go to pony club or learn to ride on conventional breeds in conventional disciplines. My experience was riding ex-racehorses along lanes/bridleways/open fields through our local villages. As I got older, I decided to explore working life in the racing industry. This led to my decision to be involved in horse welfare professionally, pursuing my journey as an equine physiotherapist, with a particular sensitivity for ex-racehorses.

After having a brief break from owning TBs (dipping my toe into the world of dressage and warmbloods), I have gone back to my roots and currently have two beautiful ex-racehorses to retrain. Re-connecting with the RoR community, through clients and during competitions, has truly felt like ‘coming home’. Likeminded people that have experienced similar unique journeys, that support each other and advocate for these athletes, are a pretty great community.

Running the TCS London Marathon has always been a ‘bucket list’ experience for me. After suffering a ruptured ACL and MCL in April 2024, for the first time, I didn’t apply for the marathon ballot. Retraining and rehabilitating my body over the past 12 months, gave me a new understanding of what racehorses go through when transitioning to new careers. So, when I saw the applications open for RoR’s charity place, I jumped to my laptop, wine in hand, and immediately filled out my application.

I am super excited, and truthfully super nervous, to be taking on this challenge. However, I can’t wait to help raise awareness and funds for RoR, and to share this journey with all of you!

I can't wait to see you all at the finish line!
