Every year, more than 2,000 racehorses retire from racing in Great Britain. Like people changing jobs, these horses need to learn new skills, adapt to new environments, and sometimes find new homes.
We offer education and support for owners of former racehorses, strengthening the bond between them. In addition, we provide vital welfare for former racehorses that have fallen on hard times.

A dream come true: Kelly Smith and Polo's journey
In October 2023, I treated myself to the best 40th birthday gift ever—my horse, Le Pogues Storm, known as Polo. My journey with him began in July 2023. Recently retired from racing, Polo was calm, well-mannered, and a dream to ride. I immediately thought how amazing it would be to have him, but at the time, I had no funds for a new horse, and Polo wasn’t for sale.
From uncertainty to a bright future: One horse's journey with the protection of RoR’s Retraining Assessment Programme
For some racehorses, retirement raises more questions than answers. At RoR, our Retraining Assessment Programme (RAP), run in partnership with our aftercare partner, HEROS Charity, is dedicated to helping these horses, particularly those facing challenges in their transition out of racing due to temperament or veterinary concerns. Delivered by HEROS, this programme provides a comprehensive assessment followed by a tailored retraining plan for eligible horses.
RoR steps in to rescue Irish Thoroughbreds in illegal transport case
Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) has provided critical support for two Irish Thoroughbreds found in desperate conditions, having been discovered on a transport lorry, illegally bound for slaughter abroad.
Age is no barrier: My journey with former racehorses
I'm Natasha Andrews, a British Showjumping coach based in County Durham, currently pursuing my UKCC Level 4 at Gloucester University through British Equestrian. Alongside my coaching, I specialise as a veterinary physiotherapist, having qualified at Nottingham vet school. I focus on strength and conditioning support for former racehorses transitioning into their second careers. I reached out to RoR to share some inspiring success stories from my clients and to emphasise that age is no barrier to owning and enjoying an RoR horse.
